Music is never far from my consciousness. As I write, I'm
listening to the Brahms Third Symphony. I play the piano
every day (mostly Bach, Beethoven, and especially Mozart).
My favorite form of relaxation is to plunk myself in front
of the stereo and listen to, say, a Shostakovich symphony
and follow in the score. My stories are sprinkled with
musical references and lingo; the one most intimately musical
is "The Song of the Earth," inspired by Mahler. On this page,
you can listen to snippets of my compositions and read my thoughts
on musical form and content (when other writing allows me the freedom
